The dragon enjoys a very high reputation in Chinese culture. Traditional Chinese dragon worship developed from primitive people who struggled to survive by fishing and hunting. For them, the dragon is a divine, mythical creature that brings good fortune, prosperity and bounty. It is the symbol of emperors and imperial rule, emperors entitled themselves exclusively as ‘dragon’; their thrones were called ‘dragon thrones’, their clothes ‘dragon gowns’. And its legends have shaped a good portion of modern Chinese culture.
