A Medal for Father

There was a story about a German switchman who was very responsible for his duty. One day, he was about to switch the rail for one of two trains that were coming past the station.
Arriving at the rail junction, he saw one train coming slowly; meanwhile, opposite to it, another train hummed near with lightening speed. When he prepared to switch the rail, suddenly he found his child standing in the rail and playing cheerfully; the boy was too happy to notice the speedy train aiming at him.
In an instant, the switchman wanted to dash to his son. But the experience told him, in such a limited time, if taking priority to the child, he would not be able to switch the rail on time and it would cause a very terrible result: the collision of two trains.
In this critical moment, he shouted at his child, "Lie down, be quick!" promptly, he switched the rail right before the roaring train passed through safely.
After that, the father collapsed on the ground, not daring to see what happened to his child.
However, his child remained safe and sound after the train passed by--The child, on hearing his father, lay down his stomach to the ground at once. Consequently, he, except for being scared, got no hurt at all. Hugging his boy, the father was so happy that he burst into joyful tears.
On hearing this, the king of Germany thought the switchman was uncommon, and then decided to summon him to the palace. There the switchman was not only praised but also was granted a Medal of Honor by the king.
When the news spread, some of the public thought it was fairly justifiable for a switchman to be praised by the king, but not that justifiable for he being awarded the Medal which represented the highest rank of honor.
The official responds to the public, "It goes without saying that one should be responsible to his duty and many of us do well in from this perspective. However, it is not that easy to educate a child who will follow and cooperate with the father at a moment of life-or-death. So, this is a medal for Father."

How Our Posterity Survive?
A piece of news from today's Xinmin Evening reported that, under the promotion of some environment organizations, a group of young people from Britain, South Africa, India, and Russia and other countries, wrote letters which were consigned to posterity. In these letters they expressed their apologies for what they had done to the contemporary eco-environment. Being sealed, these letters were buried into over 100 well-chosen venues and would be dug out 50 years later. A young Briton in a letter wrote, "Our forests are diminishing, the deserts are expanding, and at the same time the seaside cities are going to be engulfed by the sea due to the greenhouse effect. We hereby express our deep regrets for that, we left you a world full of grievous and unpleasant scenes." Another letter from a Russian described the great environmental damage caused by the nuclear leakage From Qie'erluobei'er, and that, the Black Sea, because of pollution, was on the decline to be a real black sea. These young people considered the irresponsible behaviors of the contemporary human beings were to blame for the environmental disasters. And if things kept going, they said, severer disasters were doomed to our posterity.
