Language and Social Identity

It stands to reason that one’s language is closely intertwined with one’s social identity. Looking back on my days in Australia, I remember a neighbour of mine who was planning to run for a seat in parliament. Every morning after he got up, he would start polishing up his pronunciation so that his speech would sound both pleasant to the ear and indicative of a status of power.

It is true that language is a bearer of one’s social identity. This is especially the case in a multiethnic or multicultural society. The so-called identity can be interpreted as a structure of knowledge which exhibits such information as cultural background, depth of knowledge and even geographical location pertaining to the social group you hail from.

Language rubs off on one’s perception of its corresponding culture. For instance, a survey demonstrated that when Chinese bilinguals were approached in Chinese with questions related to cultural attitudes, etc, it was obvious to see that their answers were more tinged with Chinese characteristics than when such questions were raised in English. To make things interesting, when Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong and Macao residents were approached in Mandarin Chinese with questions related to Chinese culture and religious belief, etc, they tended to produce more westernized answers than when such questions were raised in Cantonese.

In reality, most Chinese foreign language learners cannot be truly equated with the so-called bilinguals, rather, they are dual-language users as the latter are confined to language and expression while the former extend to thinking and living. However, this process is not a static one, but of a convertible nature.

Therefore, what a language learner learns in nature is a kind of social relationship, a relationship that he understands coming into play by transcending time and space. Consequently, he is faced with not only linguistic problems, but also
various social identity issues that are constantly in change.

Research has also shown that one does not always follow a fixed speaking style, but shifts along with social context and the audience. In general, individual speech is inclined towards homogeneity (i.e. to follow suit), but sometimes it can gravitate towards heterogeneity (i.e. to display one’s own character). For example, I found my Peking accent[1] becoming more enriched when I was back in Beijing, while my British friend spoke with an even more distinct British accent during his[2] stay in Australia—I wondered if this was an effort to accentuate his own status.

During the process of adapting to an exotic culture, people would also follow one of two attitudes, positive or negative, with regard to their mother tongue. Some would actively plunge into some other mainstream culture whilst intentionally debilitating their proficiency in mother tongue, whereas others would make a point of seeking reinforcement and prominence in this regard, taking it as an advantage to themselves.

Generally speaking, if a language spoken or used by a certain social group is the one held in esteem by the society (such as the Queen’s English the aristocrats speak in the UK), that group would be with a stronger sense of social superiority, and its members would also deliberately show that they are out of the common, with a desire of maintaining their positive group traits. Of course, it is inevitable to see some people taking after the speech patterns of this group.

One can also be judged by other people based on one’s language, in which case, one’s social status, degree of education, morality, intelligence, aptitude, even wealth and other information, as research has shown, can be elicited.

Hence, language means a lot to a person. If apparels are seen as embellishments to one’s body, language could then serve as an embodiment of one’s overall values. Language, therefore, instead of being merely reduced to a type of tool, should be thought of as a kind of personal quality.

[1] The accent of the Chinese dialect of Beijing (also called “Pekingese”) which is characterized by a proliferation of rhotic vowels and serves as the phonological basis of Mandarin Chinese.

[2] In this paragraph, “his” has been chosen by the translator only as a stylistic convenience as the gender of the person referred to was not unveiled in the original text.
